The Winning Poker Network (WPN) introduced a new tourney format last month that has grabbed the attention of thousands of online players. They are called Freebuy Tournaments, and they combine all the best aspects of a traditional freeroll, with the oft-favored ability to purchase re-buys and add-ons. The structure has been so well-received that WPN is promoting a $150k GTD Freebuy Super Series next weekend.
Freebuy Tournaments – Structure and Benefits
Freebuy tournaments start out just like any other freeroll event. All members of the online poker room can register for the tournament at no cost, and there’s always a guaranteed prize pool up for grabs. However, for the first three hours of play, entrants will have the option of paying real money to add-on more chips to their stack. Additionally, if a player is eliminated from the tourney, they have the option to re-buy their way back in.
Freebuy tournaments afford benefits for all types of online poker players. For serious players, traditional freerolls have never been largely attractive because, without the risk of investment, there’s less incentive to compete at the highest level. Recreational players often see freerolls as an opportunity to win money while playing recklessly.
It’s that same reckless play that frustrates the more skilled variety, but being able to purchase additional chips in freebuy tournaments not only gives them motivation to play their hardest, it increases the chances that strategists will finish high in the money. At the same time, casual players with no intention of investing still get their kicks.
WPN $150k GTD Freebuy Super Series
The Wining Poker Network will be hosting a $150,000 GTD Freebuy Super Series next weekend. From May 8-17, the freebuy tournaments series will feature 57 events, taking place at all hours of the day, from the early a.m. to late into the night.
All tournaments are free to enter, with optional re-buys and add-ons scaling from $0.01 to $20, and guaranteed prize pools that range from $500 to $20,000. All major tournament formats are on the roster, including NLHE, PLO and PLO8.
The highlight of the Freebuy Super Series is the unofficial ‘Main Event’, which takes place on Sunday, May 17th at 5:30pm. Slated for Event #55, this NLHE freebuy tournament has the largest prize of $20,000 GTD, pricing re-buys and add-ons at $20 a piece.
Another event sure to draw a mighty crowd is NLHE Event #16, scheduled for Sunday, May 10th and boasting an $8,000 GTD. It kicks off at 8:00pm and delivers re-buys and add-ons at $5 each.
About the Winning Poker Network
WPN is the most distinguished offshore poker network that continues to accept – and pay – US online poker players. It’s made up of 7 operators, including Americas Cardroom, Black Chip Poker, BetCRIS Poker, BetDSI Poker, Bookmaker Poker, True Poker and Ya Poker.
Unlike many of its offshore, US-facing competitors, like the recently (finally!) defunct Lock Poker, WPN has maintained an unrivaled commitment to its players. For that reason, and the network’s allegiance to innovation—as was evident in the creation of freebuy tournaments—WPN has attracted an impressive player base over the years.
The irrefutable popularity of the network allows them to promote the largest GTD events and online poker series available to Americans who don’t reside in a state where online poker is legally regulated.
